An Overview of the Shiva Purana

The Shiva Purana is one of the eighteen Maha Puranas, and among the most revered texts dedicated entirely to Lord Shiva. Composed in Sanskrit, it is traditionally divided into twelve sections (samhitas), covering Shiva's cosmic role as creator, preserver, and destroyer, his marriage to Parvati, the birth of Ganesha and Kartikeya, and the philosophical underpinnings of Shaivism.

Beyond its mythological narratives, the Shiva Purana is prized for its teachings on the nature of the soul (atman), the practice of devotion (bhakti), and the significance of the twelve Jyotirlingas — sacred shrines believed to house Shiva's radiant form across India.

For practitioners today, the text remains a foundational reference for understanding not just Shiva's stories, but the broader philosophical framework of non-dualism that many later schools of Hindu thought would build upon.
