Anandibai Joshi became India's first woman to earn a medical degree — in 1886. She sailed to America alone. Learned English from nothing. Qualified as a doctor at 21 in Philadelphia. Returned to India. Died of tuberculosis at 22 — but not before permanently changing what was considered possible for women.
