વિશ્વમાંના સૌથી મોટા કાર્યરત હિંદુ મંદિર સંકુલોમાંનું એક, 156 એકર વિસ્તારમાં ફેલાયેલું અને સાત ગોળાકાર ઘેરા ધરાવે છે.

મંદિરની મૂળભૂત કથાઓ 1000 વર્ષથી વધુ જૂની છે, જેમાં ચોળા, પાંડ્ય અને વિજ્ઞાનગર રાજવંશો હેઠળ મોટા વિસ્તરણો થયા.
